One week before the release of Thor: Love and Thunder, its director Taika Waititi looks back on a very funny (and a little embarrassing) anecdote: a big blunder he made during a discussion with the actress Natalie Portmanwhich interprets Jane Foster in the 29th film of the MCU.
Natalie Portman, of Star Wars to the MCU
In a week to the day, either next Wednesday, July 13, Marvel fans will finally be able to discover Thor: Love and Thunder, Thor’s fourth solo movie adventure and the 29th MCU film. In this one, the God of Thunder played by Chris Hemsworth, will have to face ane new threat in the person of Gorr, the Slayer of the Gods (Christian Bale). For this, he will have to offer the help of Korg, to which the director Taika Waititi himself lends his voice and the movements. But it is also his ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who has more or less the same powers as him, that he will find.
The Israeli-American actress had already appeared in previous installments, but also in other successful films. The fans of Star Wars think in particular of the prelogy, in which she interprets the queen then senator Padmé Amidala, who will eventually become pregnant with Anakin Skywalker and then die giving birth to her two children, Luke and Leia.
In short, a central role in the saga, which Taika Waititi has however purely and simply forgotten when he discussed his Star Wars movie project with the actress.
An apology to make to Princess Padmé
It was during an interview with the media RollingStone that Taika Waititi returned to the blunder he made on the set of Thor: Love and Thunder. If you follow the news of the New Zealand director, that of the franchise Star Wars or both, you probably know that this one is working on a movie Star Warswhich will be his first in this universe. It is therefore quite natural that when he discussed it with Natalie Portman (Jane Foster in the MCU), he made her understand that he could offer her a role… Forgetting that the Star Wars universe was already (very) familiar to him.
Natalie [Portman] asked me: “What are you doing next?”. And I was like, “I’m trying to work on something related to Star Wars. Have you ever wanted to be in a Star Wars movie?” She said to me, “I’ve played in Star Wars movies”. I forgot these movies existed. Taika Waititi
If Taika Waititi tells this anecdote with humor and self-mockery, we imagine that the scene must have been quite embarrassing for him at the time. But because the feature film Star Wars of the director should totally renew the franchise and introduce us to characters and stories, maybe Natalie Portman could return as a new heroine?
As a reminder, in Thor: Love and Thunderthe 41-year-old actress will reprise her role as Jane Foster, who suffers from a serious illness, like the character in the comics. If the light tone of the film should not be impacted, Waititi wanted “trying to provide a bit more human issues and emotional journeys”. On our side, we had the chance to discover the film in preview, and our review is available right here!
