The surprising statements of Alizée Cornet on “the Covid epidemic” at Roland-Garros

COVID – “Everyone got it and we didn’t say anything”. The French number one Alizée Cornet made startling revelations about the Roland-Garros tournament which took place from May 22 to June 5. While the London Grand Slam of Wimbledon is currently taking place, the tennis player was questioned at a press conference about the packages of Marin Cilic and Matteo Berrettini, after positive tests for Covid-19.

The Italian Matteo Berrettini, outgoing finalist of the London Grand Slam and one of the favorites of this 2022 edition, and the Croatian Marin Cilic gave up before even treading the English lawn, both contaminated.

On this subject, the French, 37th in the world, did not mince his words on the management of the epidemic in these tournaments. “When it comes out on big players like that, it will start to set fire to the lake everywhere, and that worries me a little ”, believes Cornet. According to her, the Covid-19 has “entered into mores” and no longer necessarily requires a protocol. However, she specifies that she does not want to “underestimate the Covid effect”.

“We are not going to self-test to get into trouble!”

“Some years in tournaments, there were gastrointestinal hecatombs because of not very fresh food. There were two, three, four players who withdrew, it was just bad luck. We are not going to put a protocol for gastros! The Covid, now, has entered the mores, there are vaccines etc. If we go back to stuff, I’m not going there!”, she replied to journalists.

She even goes so far as to make a rather surprising exit: “At Roland-Garros, there was an epidemic of Covid, nobody talked about it. In the locker room, everyone got it and we didn’t say anything”.

Asked more about this information, she clarified: “Yes, I think there have been a few cases and it is a tacit agreement between us. We are not going to test ourselves to get into trouble! Afterwards, I saw girls wearing masks, maybe because they knew and didn’t want to pass on. You also need to have a civic spirit… But I won’t say more about it”.

Three cases of Covid identified at Roland-Garros

According to a source close to the Parisian Grand Slam contacted by AFP, three cases of Covid-19 were identified during the 2022 edition. This does not exclude possible other tests carried out outside the supervision of the tournament.

Among these three cases, the outgoing champion Barbora Krejcikova is the only one to have publicly reported it.

The French Tennis Federation (FFT), organizer of Roland-Garros, reminded AFP that under current government instructions, the vaccination or health pass was no longer required and that it was “ unable to force anyone to take a test” at the time of the tournament.

However “as soon as a test is positive, the player withdraws”, she specified.
