Former OM attacking midfielder Mathieu Valbuena talks in the columns of Ouest-France about the departure of Steve Mandanda for Rennes. The RMC Sport consultant does not understand why the historic Marseille goalkeeper left Provence.
Steve Mandanda’s departure from Rennes is going badly for some Marseillais, including former players. Mathieu Valbuena, who rubbed shoulders with the goalkeeper between 2007 and 2014, is “very surprised” at OM’s decision to let him go two years from the end of his contract. The most capped player in the history of the Marseille club (613 games) signed this Wednesday for two seasons in Brittany.
“Comparing the matches of the two (Mandanda and Lopez) last season, there is no comparison”
“For me, it’s an incomprehensible decision on the part of Marseille, and a very, very good deal for Rennes, launches Valbuena in the columns of West France. As much as I can understand that OM are preparing for the future with Pau Lopez, as much by comparing the matches of the two last season, there is no comparison in my opinion. By the way, I think it’s an evolution of football in which I no longer recognize myself”. In 2021-2022, ‘Il Fenomeno’ played 20 matches, against 36 for his Spanish counterpart.
“Everyone knows the man, adds the consultant RMC Sport. We know that he is very attached to Marseille and its region. I thought that with the departure of Jorge Sampaoli, the cards were going to be reshuffled in the hierarchy of goalkeepers but we saw immediately, with the presentation of Igor Tudor on Monday, that things were going to continue in the same way”.
“Genesio had called me to discuss not only the player, but also his personality”
Mathieu Valbuena also learns that the Rennes coach, who rubbed shoulders with him in Lyon (2015-2017), contacted him to discuss the Mandanda case: “Bruno Genesio called me to discuss, not only the player, but also of his personality. Inevitably, I know him very well and I think nothing but good things about him”.
“In Rennes, he’s going to play, have fun somewhere you want it, concludes the current Olympiacos player, certain of his future success. Which was no longer the case in Marseille, not the from the supporters but from the club. I repeat, it’s a great move from Stade Rennais and I have no doubt that he will perform there”. The first preparation match for the Rouge et Noir is scheduled for Saturday 16 July against Fribourg.
