The Hôtel de la Marine participates in the France-Portugal season, with an exceptional temporary exhibition, highlighting more than 90 works from the collections of Calouste Gulbenkian. From June 10 to October 2, 2022, come and discover the exhibition “Gulbenkian by himself: in the intimacy of a collector”.
The season France – Portugal also takes place in the Al Thani collection of the Hotel de la Marine! From June 10 to October 2, 2022, admire the jewels of the Portuguese Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, dedicated to the multi-billionaire and early 20th century art collector Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian. This temporary exhibition, entitled Gulbenkian by himself: in the intimacy of a collectorput on the spotlight 90 works of artcarefully selected from the masterpieces of this collection.
We admire various paintings, sculptures, textiles, books and works of art that the collector has acquired over sixty years. The esthete chose these works according to the scarcity, of the preciousness, from know how requested, the origin or the usefulness of the parts.
In fact, we can see handicrafts from theantiquity at theArt Nouveauprecious objects having belonged to the crowned heads of the world, illuminated manuscripts of the Renaissance, parts of theislamic artprecious objects fromAsia or even paintings made by Albrecht Dürer, Jean-Antoine Watteau or Francesco Guardi. By going through this exhibition step by step, by examining each work chosen by Calouste Gulbenkian, the personality of the collector is revealed little by little. The heterogeneous tastes of this Armenian collector testify to his open to world and sound education.
The exhibition Gulbenkian by himself: in the intimacy of a collector allows us to admire real masterpieces, sometimes very old. Sculptures and bronzes representing King Padibastet I, first pharaoh of the XXIII dynasty (818-793 BC), Greek coins from Antiquity, diadem made by René Lalique and exhibited at theParis Universal Exhibition in 1900, 12th century vase from Sicily, table service commissioned by Catherine II, Empress of Russia, clocks, precious 15th century books, 16th century Persian silk carpet, Persian manuscript dedicated to Sultan Iskandar, fine porcelain from around the world entire…
The diversity of these works, the eclecticism of their origins, their forms, their colors are astonishing. Gulbenkian ignored no art, no civilization. These are real pieces of history, works testifying to the greatest know-how of humanity over the centuries that are presented to us. Their perfect preservation shows all the interest that the collector had for these pieces.
