Good plan: It’s time to buy a used graphics card: Here’s why prices on the second-hand market are collapsing! – Mag Mirror

Graphics card prices have finally normalized thanks to increased supply, lower demand from gamers with money, the suspension of tariffs and the long-awaited collapse of the market. exploitation of cryptocurrencies. You can now find many new graphics cards at or near MSRP. Likewise, the aforementioned conditions have also set up the used graphics card market for attractive prices once again.

With that statement, however, comes a slight caveat, as popular second-hand marketplaces like eBay seem downright chaotic at first glance. There are still plenty of sellers trying to sell new and used graphics cards at exorbitant prices. Some are trying to sell new cards, unaware that market conditions are drastically different than in 2021. Others, perhaps, bought their cards at huge markups and are now desperate to minimize losses.

A look at Newegg pricing for new graphics cards can quickly establish a baseline for what you should be paying for a particular model. We used this data to target the right prices on used graphics card marketplaces like eBay and Facebook Marketplace. Of course, there are bargains to be found.

Mining Profitability Soars

The latest change in the price of used graphics cards can likely be attributed to miners selling their rigs, and there are plenty of announcements suggesting that. Taking a quick look on eBay, we came across many listings where mining seemed to be the primary purpose of graphics cards. Other sellers may have used their cards for similar purposes, but aren’t as bold in displaying their mining rigs or card sets in ads.

Other sellers seem to be selling cards that were primarily used for gaming or productivity. Given that the next generation of graphics cards is potentially a few months away, it’s normal to see this. End users usually sell their cards in order to use the money for a new purchase. Others may simply step up to a higher level of performance.

Either way, there are some potential bargains if you filter out the ads. Our general conclusions are that many used cards are now selling for MSRP. But there are buy-it-now offers and auctions well below MSRP for nearly every model. One trend we’ve noticed is that higher level cards have depreciated the most. This is especially true for the Nvidia RTX 3080 12GB, 3080 Ti, and 3090. You can also find decent deals on the AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT and 6900 XT.

Price segmentation has also collapsed for all models, including Nvidia’s once-coveted RTX 30 Series FE cards. If you want to grab a bargain on an FE card or a card with a factory overclock and oversized heatsink, the second-hand market is one way to do it.

A Quick Look at Used Graphics Card Prices

We’ve collected some current data on a few of the most popular graphics cards for PC gaming. We used Newegg as a benchmark and filtered primarily listings from eBay, but we also checked US listings on Facebook Marketplace and confirmed similar prices.

We’ll start with Nvidia’s RTX 30 series. Just like in the new market, the RTX 3060 and 3060 Ti continue to hold a value above MSRP. Fortunately, this is the main exception to fluctuating prices. You might be able to bid for something just below MSRP, and there are a few buy-it-now listings at or near MSRP. There’s simply better value at higher performance levels, so you might want to put a little more money in for an RTX 3070.

There are plenty of second-hand options for RTX 3070s near or just above the $500 MSRP on eBay. If you make an offer, you might be able to get something below the MSRP. Additionally, you may be able to find prices below MSRP in local online marketplaces. However, you can just pick up a new Gigabyte Gaming OC model for $599 from Newegg.

It’s much the same case with the RTX 3080, with many options listed at or around $100 above the $699 MSRP. If you go through the auction route, you might be able to get one for $50-100 less. Prices in local markets are just above or below the MSRP, with sometimes good bargains.

Things get interesting above the RTX 3080 price bracket. The RTX 3080 12GB, 3080 Ti, and RTX 3090 are now selling well below MSRP, whether used or new. Examples we found include an RTX 3090 selling for $1200, an RTX 3080 Ti selling for $899, and many more. However, for a little more money you can get a new card with similar performance. An example is this MSI RTX 3080 10GB which is $790.

As for AMD, the second-hand market is surprisingly disappointing. We found many results for the 6700 XT between $420 and $450. Considering you can get an MSI 6700 XT Mech for $485 (just $5 more than the MSRP), this is probably the better choice. For the 6800 XT, buy-it-now prices are nothing special and start around $700. If you go through the auction route, the price only drops about $50.

Your best bet is to buy new for AMD. Two particularly good sales we found were for a $290 Sapphire Pulse 6600 and an $890 MSI Gaming X Trio 6900 XT.

Don’t be fooled

Be sure to weigh the risks of buying a used graphics card versus a new one. One of the best things to do is find a local listing where the seller can show you that the card is still within specification. Be sure to inspect it to make sure it is not damaged or worn. If you’re buying online, consider asking for a video of how it works, or at least make sure of the seller’s reputation.

Finally, see if you can get a copy of the original receipt or if there’s a way to register the card with the manufacturer once you’ve acquired it to make sure the original warranty applies to you. Graphics cards are guaranteed for at least two years (three years for some manufacturers) when purchased new.

Finally, make sure that the price of the used graphics card you are considering is sufficiently lower than that of a new model. Prices continue to drop weekly, sometimes daily.
