We knew Renault for its cars, even its aircraft engines, but not for its cassette players. Thanks to a collaboration with a music player manufacturer, Renault’s PlayeR5 pays homage to the famous Renault 5.

To celebrate fifty years of the Renault 5 (already!), the automaker is bringing another 1970s icon up to date with a cassette player developed by a French start-up, We Are Rewind.

An all-yellow Renault cassette player

On its online store The Original Store, Renault sells, among other things, miniature cars, branded clothing and more. giveaways. On the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the Renault 5, the automobile manufacturer is launching the PlayeR5, a portable cassette player retrofitted“.

Its all-aluminum design is inspired by the Renault 5 Prototypea prototype electric city car presented in January 2021. Moreover, the electric Renault 5 should be released in 2024. There is yellow mostly on the front panel, underlined by solid black, but also with a small touch of red on the front panel, which shows the cassettes when the red on the prototype was on the taillights. At the rear, it’s all black with the Renault logo displayed.

A Bluetooth cassette player, but with a stylus for the most nostalgic

Yes, you read correctly, this resolutely retro player is equipped with Bluetooth 5.0, which can be activated/deactivated at any time. A walkman that has dimensions of 140.8 x 88.8 x 33.5 mm and can be recharged via a supplied 5 V USB cable. The announced autonomy of this device is eight to ten hours. The little touch that will make (or not) the difference is the presence of a wooden pencil to reassemble your cassettes yourself. Rest assured, the player has a button for this.

The PlayeR5 is available for pre-order on Renault’s The Originals store for 189 euros for shipments from August 12, the price of nostalgia in yellow. Although a stylus is included to show any slipped tapes, the real slippage comes from Renault itself. He announces a collection of NFTs on the PlayeR5 which will be unveiled at the end of 2022, without knowing more about the interest of said NFTs.
